The ULTIMATE Staccato XC Upgrade! Aluminum Grip and flat face trigger
Welcome back to Jim's Armory. In this one, Jim swaps the stock components on his Staccato XC for a Cheely L2 aluminum grip and an Atlas trigger, chasing a more modern look and better feel. As Jim puts it, he's had a bit of a love-hate relationship with this gun in past videos, but this upgrade goes a long way toward winning him back over. The process covers everything from trigger fitting to sear spring tuning to final safety checks, so here's the full rundown.
Safe and Clear, and a Baseline Measurement Jim starts by confirming the gun is clear using an Atlas Gunworks chamber flag, which sticks out of the barrel and occupies the chamber so there's no question the gun is safe to work on. Before disassembly, he measures the factory trigger pull on his gauge, landing right around 1 lb 7.5 oz - very light - so he has a baseline to compare against once the new parts are in.
Parts Inventory The new hardware includes a Cheely L2 aluminum grip in the standard aggressive texture, which comes with its own mag release and aluminum mainspring housing (an upgrade over the factory plastic piece), a Cheely magwell, an Atlas trigger, a Red Dirt trigger, a new sear spring, a mainspring housing retaining pin, and an extra front grip bushing since these can vary in width between grips.
Disassembly Jim tears the gun down to the frame, pulling the slide, thumb safety, grip safety, hammer, mainspring housing, and sear spring. Pro-Tip: never dry fire a 1911 or 2011 with the slide off - the frame is thin right behind the hammer, and letting it slam forward unchecked can crack it. He keeps all the original OEM parts together in case he ever wants to convert the gun back or sell it with its factory grip intact.
Building the New Mainspring Housing and Mag Release Jim finds the factory mainspring housing pin too long for the new setup and swaps in a shorter one, and adds a touch of grease to the new mag release for smoother operation.
Fitting the Trigger This is where most of the work happens. Cheely intentionally leaves the trigger slot on the L2 undersized so it can accommodate different trigger widths - in this case measuring 227 thousandths for the stock Staccato trigger, 234 for the Red Dirt, and 234-243 for the Atlas. Jim decides on the Atlas, which means removing the most material. Using a fine file with no teeth on the edges, he works the corners of the trigger slot, checking fit constantly by sliding the trigger in and watching for binding. He notes the bottom of the channel is intentionally raised in one section to allow for adjustment, so he files that down as well until the trigger moves freely with no rattle. Pro-Tip: aim for a little bit of play rather than a bone-tight fit - a loose trigger might rattle, but a too-tight one can bind up with dirt in the field. Once the file work is done, he cleans up the corners with an 800-grit stone rather than leaving file marks.
Grip-to-Frame Fitment and Bushing The grip fits the frame without gaps, which pleasantly surprises Jim given how often these require extra fitting. The front grip bushing that came on the original frame is a bit loose, so he swaps in a new one and files it slightly for a snug fit, since it's the bushing - not the screws - that keeps the front of the grip tight.
Sear Spring Tuning Reinstalling the ignition system with the factory sear spring produces a dead trigger - not enough tension to push the disconnector up. Swapping in the new sear spring gets it functional, but the initial pull comes in at 2 lb 3 oz. Jim spends a long stretch bending the sear spring and adjusting the disconnector's position, chasing a sub-2-lb pull, and at one point overshoots into hammer follow before backing off. He settles around 1 lb 14 oz, prioritizing a crisp reset over an ultra-light pull. In Jim's opinion, sub-2-lb triggers raise the risk of negligent discharges, so he's willing to trade a bit of weight for reliability.
Overtravel Adjustment With the pull weight set, Jim dials in overtravel on the trigger, tightening the screw until the gun won't fire, then backing it off in small increments until it breaks cleanly with just a bit of travel left for a safety margin.
Grip Safety, Thumb Safety, and Pinning Jim reinstalls the grip safety and thumb safety, confirming both function. Pro-Tip: push the thumb safety forward before sliding it on - it makes assembly easier since there's no spring pressure to fight. He decides to pin the grip safety but saves that step for a separate video.
Crucial Safety Checks Jim runs through his full safety check routine: confirming the grip safety blocks the trigger bow, verifying the thumb safety blocks the sear and listening for any telltale click that would indicate sear movement on the hammer hooks, checking that the hammer won't fall out of battery (the disconnector check), and making sure the trigger's pre-travel adjustment hasn't pushed the trigger bow back far enough to interfere with the grip safety.
Magazine Fitment The new magwell changes what mags will feed - magazines with a high-rise baseplate won't seat, and the factory Staccato "shorty" mags aren't long enough to clear the magwell either. Only magazines with smaller, competition-style baseplates work with the new setup.
Loctite and Final Assembly Once satisfied with function, Jim cleans the grip screws with acetone and applies Loctite on one side and Vibra-Tite VC-3 on the other, a combination he's growing fond of since it secures the screws while still allowing intentional removal.
Final Thoughts Jim considers this one of the best upgrades he's done to the Staccato XC, combining a lighter, better-looking aluminum grip with a properly tuned trigger and a safe, crisp break.
