Staccato XC $4,300 Paperweight: Fixing a Defective Extractor

Welcome back to Jim's Armory. This one is a little more personal than usual: Jim's brand new Staccato XC, a $4,300 pistol, came out of the box with a failure to return to battery that showed up almost immediately at the range. In this video, Jim walks through his disappointment with the gun, diagnoses the problem down to the extractor, and fixes it himself on the bench before putting it back through its paces.

A Rough First Impression Jim opens up about his expectations for the Staccato XC - he'd hoped for a boutique, hand-fit gun given the price tag, but the pistol struggled to get through more than a few shots without a malfunction. He demonstrates the failure to return to battery repeatedly at the range, including during a string of single-shot drills, and admits the experience soured him on the gun's reputation as the benchmark 2011 that other pistols get compared against. He's candid that this doesn't reflect everyone's experience - he notes a friend who shoots USPSA Limited Optics with a Staccato XL and has had nothing but good things to say about it - but for his own XC, the fundamentals just weren't there out of the box.

Getting Safe and Getting In Before touching anything, Jim clears the pistol using new Atlas chamber flags that physically occupy the chamber, so there's no question the gun is safe to handle. From there he pulls the slide and barrel to get access to the extractor, which he suspects immediately - he can feel a burr on it just by touch. He rules out a weak recoil spring as the culprit since he's confident in that component, pointing to the extractor as the likely source of the malfunctions.

Diagnosing the Extractor Jim removes the firing pin and firing pin stop, keeping a finger over the firing pin so it doesn't launch across the room, then punches the extractor out from the back using a non-marring brass punch. With the extractor out, he runs a tension test using a snap cap: seating the dummy round behind the extractor hook and shaking the barrel to see how easily it releases. In his view, it should come out with a few shakes, and this one felt a little too tight. More telling, though, was the finish - the underside of the extractor was rough and unfinished, with a sharp burr right on the corner, as if it had been dropped or struck by a sharp tool during assembly. Jim's take is blunt: at this price point, that kind of finishing work should already be done at the factory.

Pro-Tip: When diagnosing failure-to-return-to-battery issues, check the extractor before assuming it's an ammo or recoil spring problem - a quick tension test with a dummy round and a shake test can tell you a lot.

Honing and Polishing the Extractor To fix it, Jim uses a fine hard Arkansas stone with a couple drops of oil, working the bottom corner of the extractor to knock off the sharp edges and following the existing angled cut already in the part. After stoning it, he inspects the extractor under a digital microscope, comparing the rough, scratched underside to the top side, which looked fine by comparison. He then moves to buffing wheels and polishing compound to finish smoothing the edges, checking his progress under magnification until the corner is smooth and shiny.

For reference, Jim compares the reworked Staccato extractor to one from an Atlas - acknowledging the Atlas is a considerably more expensive gun, so it's not a perfectly fair comparison - but notes the Atlas extractor has no sharp edges anywhere, even on the front leading edge, while the Staccato's hook still showed a sharp edge on top, though the working side was now much improved.

Reassembly and Function Checks Back at the bench, Jim reinstalls the extractor, deliberately loosening the tension slightly since he felt it had been running too tight. Sliding a dummy round into place, he notes an immediate difference - it slides "like butter" compared to before. He repeats the shake test with the barrel to confirm the round releases properly, and is satisfied with the resulting tension. Jim then loads snap caps into a magazine and runs a quick cycle check, watching for any hang-ups as he cycles rounds rapidly. Everything runs clean.

Back to the Range With the extractor addressed, Jim takes the Staccato XC back out and runs about 500 rounds through it. The gun ran flawlessly with no further issues, confirming his diagnosis was correct.

Final Thoughts Jim's takeaway is mixed: it's a small part causing a big problem, but for a gun at this price point, he expected it to be finished and ready to shoot straight out of the box. Despite the rocky start, he's decided to keep the Staccato XC and is already planning upgrades to address a couple of other gripes - an aluminum grip and mainspring housing from Cheely, a Cheely magwell, a new trigger, and a sear spring for some additional tuning. He expects some fitment issues along the way and plans to document the process.
