Sig P211: Fake 2011 Outside. Real 2011 Inside?

Welcome back to Jim's Armory. In this one, Jim takes on the debate surrounding the Sig P211 head-on: is it really a 2011, or just a 2011-shaped gun with proprietary parts stuffed inside? He's already covered the P211 in a full teardown video (linked in the description), so this time he's skipping the play-by-play of disassembly to focus on one question - which parts are proprietary Sig-only pieces, and which parts can be swapped for standard 2011 aftermarket components. To answer it, he installs a complete EGW ignition kit and puts it through function checks.

Safety First Jim starts, as always, by confirming the gun is unloaded with a chamber flag physically occupying the chamber, so there's no way a round could be present.

Comparing Recoil Springs the Easy Way Before getting into the internals, Jim shows a trick for identifying recoil springs once the paint wears off from use. Pro-Tip: put both springs on a cleaning rod (with a washer if needed to fit a smaller rod) and push down on both at once - whichever one compresses first is the lighter spring. In this case, the two are an 8 lb and a 10 lb spring.

The Upper: Fully Proprietary Jim doesn't spend much time on the slide, since he considers everything up top proprietary - the firing pin is retained with roll pins, and the spring is a different diameter than standard 2011 components. He moves on to the frame internals, which is where the real question lives.

MIM Parts and a Series 70 Conversion Pulling the hammer, sear, and disconnector, Jim points out the telltale signs of Metal Injection Molding (MIM) - ejector pin marks and a visible seam on the back of the disconnector. He walks through how MIM parts are made: oversized plastic-and-metal-dust moldings ejected with pins, then sintered at high temperature to burn away the filler and leave only metal. Not the same as billet, in his view, though he notes MIM has become common and well-refined. This particular gun also has a Series 70 conversion installed, adding a spacer plate into the mix.

The Trigger and Grip Module The trigger lifts out of the top rather than sliding out the back like a typical 2011. Jim tries fitting two Red Dirt triggers built for a Chile-style grip module, but neither clears - a standard 2011 magazine doesn't even fit all the way through the P211's grip module, since it only needs to clear P320 mags. His conclusion: you're not swapping in a standard 2011 trigger without modifying the trigger bow, and even then it'd be purely cosmetic. The ejector, however, looks to be standard issue, and Jim suspects a standard part could be fitted here.

Testing the EGW Ignition Kit This is the heart of the video: Jim compares an EGW ignition kit, piece by piece, against the Sig factory parts.

  • Plunger tube assembly: The front and rear plungers look identical to the factory parts. Jim believes this will work.

  • Sear spring: A Wilson spring looks essentially the same shape as factory, just bent and tuned for the gun. He expects it to work, though the factory spring feels tighter by comparison.

  • Disconnector: The EGW piece looks identical to the factory disconnector.

  • Main spring: The main spring housing itself is proprietary - a staccato housing doesn't fit the P211 grip, and the raised guide portions are shaped differently (straight vs. angled). But the cap and spring inside look like they could be standard parts. Comparing an ISMI 19 lb spring and an EGW 17 lb spring, the factory spring is shorter than both, so Jim suggests you could cut down a lighter spring to fit if you wanted to reduce spring weight. He test-fits the EGW spring directly and it works without feeling excessively tight.

  • Sear: Looks a little different from the factory part, but once pinned in, the geometry and angle appear to match. Jim expects it to work.

  • Hammer: The EGW skeletonized, lightened hammer fits over the pin, but the secondary safety hook location and hammer face angle differ slightly from factory. Jim isn't sure how much this will matter functionally but proceeds anyway, adding a stainless hammer strut and strut pin from EGW.

Reassembly and Function Check Jim reassembles loosely - no full Loctite or final fitting - just to prove out function. Working around the existing Series 70 conversion, he gets the EGW disconnector, sear, and hammer in along with a Colt sear spring, adjusting it just enough to get things running rather than performing a full trigger job. The grip safety checks out, and a firing pin test against a block of wood confirms positive firing pin engagement.

Crucial Safety Checks With the swapped internals in place, Jim runs through his standard safety checks. For the grip safety, he confirms it stops the trigger bow from moving rearward, watching and listening for any sear movement even though the trigger shows a little takeup. For the thumb safety, he depresses the grip safety and pulls hard on the trigger, listening for any click that would indicate the sear shifting off the hammer hooks - none found, even with the different aftermarket sear installed. Finally, he checks the hammer's secondary safety hooks, noting they now catch the hammer slightly further forward than with the factory hammer, but they still prevent the firing pin from being struck.

Final Thoughts So, how proprietary is the Sig P211? The grip module, main spring housing, and everything in the slide - firing pin, guide rod, recoil spring - are all proprietary to Sig. But the ignition components tell a different story: the plunger tube parts, sear spring, disconnector, sear, main spring, and even the skeletonized hammer from EGW all fit and functioned in Jim's test, though he notes these kits aren't turnkey and typically need some fitting and polishing. For Jim, the verdict is clear - underneath its P320-compatible, proprietary shell, the P211 really does run on 2011 internals.

Sig P211 Thumb Safety Compatibility

Welcome back to Jim's Armory. This one comes straight from the comments section: a viewer asked whether the thumb safety on the SIG P211 is proprietary, following up on Jim's earlier video installing an EGW ignition kit in the same gun. It's a fair question Jim admits he hadn't thought to cover, so in this video he puts a spare safety on the bench and finds out whether the P211 will accept an aftermarket part or whether SIG locked owners into a proprietary design.

A Familiar Safety Style The P211's thumb safety is what's known as a King's style safety, a design Jim says was popularized by King's Gun Works at some point in 1911/2011 history. The tell is a T-shaped groove machined into the safety that indexes on the hammer pin, which protrudes slightly with a small button on the end. It's not a design unique to SIG - it shows up across other 2011s too - which gave Jim a starting point for testing compatibility.

The only other gun Jim had on hand with a King's style safety was his Kimber 2K11 Comp, so that became the test subject.

Comparing the Parts Before installing anything, Jim points out one construction difference between the two guns. Most 2011s use a split pin with a tenon joint, where each side carries a bit of post. The SIG, however, uses an uneven arrangement: the passenger side safety has a short pin, while the longer end sits on the left, or driver, side. Looking at the two safeties from overhead, the SIG's appears slightly wider than the Kimber's, though Jim notes the only way to know for sure is to actually try the fit.

Testing the Fit Starting with the passenger side, Jim isn't surprised the safety drops into the hole, since the pin spacing is standard across 1911 and 2011 platforms. The problem shows up when he tries to press it down: the safety contacts the frame and can't seat all the way. Jim notes that if he weren't planning to put the safety back on the 2K11, this is an easy fix with a file.

With the safety only partially engaged, Jim goes to test whether it's actually blocking the trigger, and dry fires the gun against the frame - catching himself off guard, since he hadn't expected the sear to release with the safety only partway down.

Pro-Tip: If a thumb safety isn't seating fully, don't assume it's blocking the sear. A safety that can't travel all the way down may not be engaging at all, so verify function carefully before pulling the trigger.

Left Side Clears, Right Side Doesn't After sorting out the hammer, Jim turns his attention to the driver side safety and finds that it fits cleanly, without contacting the frame the way the passenger side does. Curious, he pulls the passenger side safety off entirely and runs the gun with only the driver side lever installed - and it works. As Jim points out, the safety doesn't technically need to be present on both sides for the gun to function, so running just the left-side lever is a viable option if the right side needs fitting work.

The Verdict on Compatibility Based on this test, Jim concludes that a standard 2011 King's style safety absolutely fits the SIG P211, at least on the geometry side - the pin spacing is standard 1911/2011 spec. If you're shopping for one, Jim says to look specifically for a "Kings" ambidextrous safety (with the possessive apostrophe-s spelling). He notes he doesn't know offhand whether a shielded version exists for this style, so that's something to research separately if that's what you're after.

The one caveat is frame width. Jim found the passenger side of the SIG contacts the frame and needs to be filed down for full engagement, while the driver side clears without issue. He also points out that this kind of fitment work isn't unusual for thumb safeties in general - the tab that engages the sear commonly comes slightly oversized from the factory and needs to be carefully filed down so it seats tightly and can't slip off the hammer hooks.

Final Thoughts The P211's King's style thumb safety isn't proprietary - a standard aftermarket King's style safety will fit, though expect to do some minor fitting on the frame side depending on which lever you're installing.
