Did I Build the Safest SIG P320?
Welcome back to Jim's Armory. In this one, Jim tackles a project he never thought he'd take on: making the SIG P320 safer. He picked up three of these guns cheap at a local gun shop and decided to add a manual thumb safety and a tabbed trigger to a pistol that, as shipped, has neither. It's part rant, part how-to, and it sets out to turn America's most controversial handgun into an affordable home-defense option Jim actually trusts to have around the house.
Why Bother With a P320 at All Jim opens by addressing the elephant in the room: the P320's history of reported uncommanded discharges and lawsuits. His issue isn't really about mechanical malfunction, though - it's that the civilian version ships without a manual safety while the military variant gets one. Jim also references a recent, serious accidental discharge shared publicly by fellow YouTuber North Wind Aerial, which reinforced his view that a safety lever is worth having, no matter how experienced a shooter is. Combined with the low price he found on these guns, Jim decided the P320 made sense as a cheap, safety-equipped gun he could stash in multiple rooms of the house rather than carry.
Breaking Down the FCU Work starts with disassembly of the Fire Control Unit (FCU). Jim walks through removing the slide lock, drifting out the sear housing pin and sear pin, and separating the small springs and internals from the FCU housing. He notes the punches he uses are the same sizes he already reaches for on his 1911/2011 projects.
Installing the MSAFE-T Manual Safety Kit With the FCU stripped, Jim moves to the MSAFE-T manual safety toolkit from Sig Mechanics, which includes cutting bits and new hardware for both the FCU and the grip module. The install requires some trial and error - Jim finds the orientation of the parts unintuitive at first, and the screws for the grip module piece are frustratingly short, barely catching a thread or two.
Pro-Tip: Insert the screws before final positioning, and expect to leave the nuts slightly loose while aligning the parts so everything sits correctly before final tightening.
Cutting the FCU and Grip Module Jim breaks out a Dremel to cut the FCU and grip module to accept the new safety parts, starting with the more aggressive tungsten bit and switching to the carbide bit as he works closer to the supplied template. He touches up a sharp point left behind with a file, and uses small polishing bits to clean up the cut before moving on to finishing touches.
Reassembling the FCU Putting the FCU back together involves reinstalling pins, springs, and small fiddly parts. Jim notes that, similar to a 1911 or 2011, all of the pins in the FCU install from left to right. Sig recommends replacing the roll pin during this kind of install, but Jim opts to reuse the original.
Pro-Tip: A small dab of grease on the tiny springs and detents helps keep them in place during reassembly so they don't go flying and get lost.
Installing the Gray Guns Tabbed Trigger The trigger swap to the Gray Guns tabbed trigger proves to be the most stubborn part of the build. Jim explains that the trigger bar geometry only allows the trigger to be removed or installed when it's all the way forward - otherwise the piece is trapped and won't clear. After some trial and error off-camera, he finds the trick: hook the part onto the small bar first, then use needle-nose pliers to force it into place on the trigger bar. He also identifies a small screw on the trigger that he believes adjusts trigger overtravel, since it contacts the same pin that passes through the assembly.
Final Assembly and Fit Once the FCU goes back into the grip module, Jim checks how well the cuts line up with the new manual safety parts and finds the fit acceptable, despite reports that the template sometimes doesn't cut deep enough. He notes the trigger pull feel is very light, comparing it to a cordless drill or electric weed eater trigger.
Crucial Safety Checks With everything reassembled, Jim confirms the tabbed trigger does its job: the trigger simply will not move to the rear unless the tab is pressed first, eliminating snag-and-fire risk from something like a shirt hem catching the trigger face. He also tests the new thumb safety, noting that engaging it (pushing it up) is smooth, but disengaging it (pushing it down) feels rough. Jim suspects the safety could benefit from being disassembled again for some filing and polishing to smooth out that motion.
Final Thoughts Jim comes away with a P320 that now has both a positive manual safety and a trigger that physically resists an unintended pull - two features he considers meaningfully safer for a gun destined to sit loaded around the house rather than live in a holster. The install wasn't clean or fast, and a few of the supplied parts fought him along the way, but for the price of the gun plus the safety kit and trigger, Jim views this as a worthwhile upgrade for a budget home-defense pistol.
