Springfield Prodigy Complete Disassembly
Welcome back to Jim's Armory. This time Jim tears down the Springfield Prodigy, taking it all the way apart and back together on the bench. As with his other teardown videos, the goal is to show you every part inside this 2011, point out what's well made, what's a cost-saving measure, and what an owner might want to address before putting rounds through it.
Safety First Jim starts, as always, by confirming the gun is clear—no magazine, nothing in the chamber, checked twice for good measure.
The Upper: A Stiff Spring and a Sticky Fit The Prodigy uses a two-piece guide rod, which Jim loosens with a 5/32 hex before removing the slide. Getting the reverse plug out reveals a recoil spring Jim describes as way oversprung for the gun—he's not sure of the exact weight, but it's clearly beefier than a typical 9 or 10 pound spring, and the mainspring feels tight too. He suspects this is compensating for tolerances, noting that the Prodigy is often treated as a project gun that people plan to upgrade parts on anyway.
Pro-Tip: When removing the recoil spring assembly, note which direction the spring is wound and twist against it, not with it, so you don't stretch out an already-tight spring.
The barrel shows some wear from what Jim guesses has been a fair number of rounds fired. Moving into the slide, the firing pin, firing pin stop, and extractor all come out with standard punches, and Jim notes each of these springs also has a specific wind direction that matters for reassembly. He also pulls the optic plate, since the Prodigy accepts a red dot footprint (it looks to be set up for a T10 in this case) and several plates ship with the gun for different optics.
The Lower: MIM Parts and a Tight Thumb Safety On the frame, Jim removes the ambidextrous thumb safety, then works the grip safety and mainspring housing loose. Before letting the trigger reset, he's careful to ease the hammer forward with his fingers rather than let it slam—these MIM hammers can crack, and the frame can be damaged too.
Digging further, Jim finds the leaf/sear spring with its three distinct fingers—one for grip safety tension, one for the disconnector, and one for the sear. The sear, disconnector, and hammer strut all show the telltale circular ejector-pin marks of Metal Injection Molding, along with a small "SA" stamp on the sear. The thumb safety is MIM on both sides as well; the grip safety, by contrast, is not MIM. Jim notes this isn't a red flag by itself—plenty of well-regarded 2011s, including the Kimber 2K11, use MIM parts extensively.
This particular Prodigy is a Series 70 configuration, without the additional firing pin safety block found on Series 80 guns—something Jim considers more desirable for a gun not really built as a duty pistol, since it tends to shoot a bit better with a lighter trigger.
Pro-Tip: When you pull the safety detent for the thumb safety, put a small bend in the spring before reinstalling. It won't affect function, but it keeps the detent from launching across the room the next time someone disassembles the gun—Jim does this on every gun he works on now.
Getting the grip module off requires two screws (a 1/16 and a 1/8), one of which uses a T-nut design on the inside—a feature Jim likes because a stripped or broken T-nut is a cheap, easy replacement rather than a ruined threaded hole in the frame. The trigger includes an overtravel adjustment screw accessible without disassembly; Jim explains his method of tightening it until the hammer won't drop, then backing off in small increments until it fires reliably with a short reset.
Reassembly and Notable Fit Issues Going back together, Jim flags a couple of quality concerns. The thumb safety's tenon fits so tightly into its slot in the frame that it's difficult to remove and reinstall—he'd consider honing that fit down for smoother operation. He also runs into trouble seating the firing pin stop, which doesn't slide into place as easily as it should even with the firing pin removed, suggesting a tolerance issue in that channel.
Pro-Tip: The sear spring must rest on top of the sear and disconnector, never behind or underneath—getting this backwards is one of the most common reasons people can't get a 2011 hammer to stay back or the gun to fire after reassembly.
Crucial Safety Checks With the gun reassembled, Jim runs his usual function checks: confirming the grip safety physically blocks the trigger bow, and confirming the thumb safety blocks the sear. He also checks the hammer's safety notch, which is meant to catch the sear hooks if the hammer is released without the trigger being pulled. Oddly, when the gun was disassembled, pulling the trigger from that notch position still let the hammer fall—something Jim considers unusual, since most guns won't let the trigger move the hammer off that notch at all. After full reassembly, the notch behaved differently and held as expected, leaving Jim intending to dig back into the gun to understand the inconsistency.
Final Thoughts The Prodigy tears down as a fairly conventional 2011, with MIM internals, a T-nut-mounted grip module, and a heavier-than-expected recoil and mainspring setup that Jim suspects is there to mask tolerance issues. The tight thumb safety fit and the firing pin stop hang-up stand out as areas he'd want to smooth out, while the hammer notch inconsistency is something he plans to investigate further.
