Let's disassemble a Sig Sauer P226 XFive together!

Welcome back to Jim's Armory. This time Jim steps away from his usual 2011 territory to put a Sig Sauer P226 X5 through a complete disassembly. It's a modern hammer-fired SAO pistol, and Jim can't help but compare its internals to the 1911/2011 platform he knows so well. Here's the full breakdown of what comes apart, how it works, and where Jim sees the design diverge from what he's used to.

Safety First Jim starts the same way he always does: verifying there's no round in the chamber and no magazine inserted, checking twice to be sure before any tools touch the gun.

The Upper: Multi-Stage Springs and Blind Roll Pins The X5 version has a small lock that prevents you from accidentally depressing the takedown "gas pedal" and sending the front of the slide flying while shooting. Once disengaged, the slide comes off and reveals a multi-stage guide rod assembly - two springs, a cup, a smaller spring, and the guide rod itself - a more complex setup than the simple single-spring guide rods Jim usually works with.

Getting the firing pin out requires removing the extractor first, which means driving out a roll pin that's half-obscured by the slide. Pro-Tip: Jim uses a split punch for these half-blind roll pins rather than reaching for an undersized standard punch - a standard punch can get stuck in the roll pin's hole and snap off inside it, ruining your day. The extractor comes out along with its spring and a rubber damper that seats inside the spring.

The firing pin itself is held in by a firing pin safety plunger that has to be pushed down with a fingernail before the pin will fully clear. Underneath it sits a small spring that drops into a drilled hole inside the firing pin channel - this is the firing pin block that makes the gun drop-safe, functioning much like a Series 80 system on a 1911 or 2011: only a full trigger pull raises the lever far enough to let the firing pin travel forward.

When removing the firing pin spring, Jim cautions against just yanking it off the pin - stretching it changes its tension and can cause the firing pin not to fully return forward. Instead, twist it off in the direction it's wound to loosen it without deforming it.

The Lower: 1911-Adjacent, But Not Quite Pulling the grip panels (T10 screws) reveals thin rubber shims between the magwell and grip meant to control vibration - small parts worth saving if you can. Inside, Jim finds an ignition system that echoes the 1911 layout but with real differences: a hammer strut, spring, and keeper at the bottom, rather than a one-piece mainspring housing. The thumb safety spring provides a satisfying tactile click, which Jim notes feels very good on this gun.

The trigger assembly is where the X5 shows its competition pedigree. The trigger is adjustable four ways by Sig's own accounting, though Jim points out the factory manual only sanctions three of those adjustments - the pre-travel screw is officially off-limits. Disassembling it reveals what Jim jokingly calls the "trigger dad" and "trigger thingamajig," parts that work together with a spring to set trigger weight and tension.

The sear and sear spring are identical on both sides - no handedness to worry about there. Jim also notes the mag release is fully ambidextrous, something he says isn't possible on a standard 2011, though he acknowledges Sig's own P210 can do it too.

The mainspring measures out at roughly 17 to 20 pounds, which Jim calls pretty stiff.

Reassembly and Quality Concerns Putting the gun back together, Jim flags a few things worth watching. The takedown screws for the grip panels thread directly into the frame rather than into a separate insert like most 1911/2011 designs use - meaning a stripped screw hole is a much bigger problem here. Pro-Tip: don't overtighten these screws; Jim's experience is that they strip easily, so snug is enough.

The rear sight plate screws, by contrast, do have a spec Jim can cite: 15 inch-pounds. He stresses using published torque values when they're available rather than guessing.

Jim also comments on the recoil spring setup, noting it feels heavy compared to what he's used to running in a 2011.

Crucial Safety Checks Throughout reassembly, Jim function-checks as he goes rather than waiting until the end. He confirms the sear engages the hammer correctly at both the half-cock and full-cock positions before moving on. Once the thumb safety is installed, he verifies that with the hammer cocked and the safety engaged, the trigger cannot release the hammer at all - and that with the safety off, the trigger works normally through both hammer positions. He also confirms the firing pin safety plunger is functioning, watching the firing pin protrude only when the plunger is pushed in as it would be by a proper trigger pull.

Final Thoughts Tearing down the P226 X5 gives Jim a good look at how a modern hammer-fired service pistol handles jobs the 1911/2011 platform solves differently - multi-stage guide rods, a driven firing pin safety block, an adjustable trigger system with more small parts than he's used to, and frame-threaded screws that demand a lighter touch.
