Is the Platypus Worth the Hype? Complete Teardown & Inspection
Welcome back to Jim's Armory. In this one, Jim tears down the Stealth Arms Platypus, a custom-order 2011 that shows up in a lot of different configurations. His specific test gun has a bull barrel and is compensated, so Jim notes upfront that owners with a bushing barrel or a different build may see some variations from what's covered here. Custom-order quirks aside, this teardown turns up several genuinely unusual design choices that set the Platypus apart from the other 2011s Jim has featured on the channel.
Safety First Jim starts, as always, by confirming the gun is clear using an orange chamber flag that physically occupies the chamber, with no magazine inserted.
The Upper: A One-Piece Bull Barrel and Multiple Takedown Methods Removing the slide is straightforward: lining up the slide lock detent and the takedown detent and pushing the pin out. From there, Jim shows off one of the gun's quirks - it offers more than one way to remove the guide rod. His preferred method uses a small hole in the guide rod that a piece of wire (a paperclip works too) can pass through to lock it in place for removal. The alternative method uses a 5/32 Allen at the end of the guide rod, but Jim dislikes this approach since it releases spring tension all at once, risking parts launching across the room. When taking the recoil spring off the guide rod, Jim points out it must be twisted in the same direction as the coils to come free cleanly - twisting the wrong way, or just pulling, will change the spring's tension.
The barrel itself is a standout feature: the barrel and integrated compensator are machined from a single piece, similar to what Jim has seen on the Staccato, rather than being threaded or pinned together - an expensive way to manufacture it, in his view.
For the firing pin, Jim uses a 3/32 punch to depress the firing pin stop and slide it off with a rocking motion, cautioning to keep a finger over the spring since it's under pressure. The extractor is a classic internal design; Jim recommends trying a non-marring plastic tool first before resorting to a punch, since the gun's Cerakote finish can chip or crack if you pry on it with metal tools.
Pro-Tip: Never dry fire a 1911 or 2011-style pistol, especially one with an aluminum frame like this one - the frame is thin near the hammer, and there's nothing to stop the hammer from slamming forward destructively.
The Lower: A One-Piece Frame and Grip Module The thumb safety comes off with a lift-and-wiggle motion. Jim notes the detent has two functions built into one piece - the front portion serves the slide stop, and the back portion gives the thumb safety its tactile click.
The mainspring housing retaining pin comes out with a 5/32 roll pin punch, a size Jim says is common across most 2011s he's worked on. Unlike most 2011s, where the mainspring housing pulls off from the rear, the Platypus's housing pulls off from the front, held by a small plastic piece that acts as a detent catching a groove. Removing the passenger-side safety to access the grip safety is also unconventional - it uses a keyway groove engaged by a head on the hammer pin, requiring the piece to be flipped up and wiggled off rather than pushed through.
Once inside, Jim finds the hammer, sear, and disconnector are not MIM parts, though they carry what appears to be a manufacturing stamp. The biggest structural surprise is the grip and frame being machined as a single aluminum piece, rather than the separate grip module and frame found on most 2011s Jim has torn down. This makes the gun notably light, something Jim says feels a little strange in hand, though he found the compensated version easy to handle at the range.
The mag release uses a locking mechanism accessed with a 1/16 fitting, turned counterclockwise to release. Removing it allows the trigger to be pulled back, pushing out a trigger bow retainer - a part Jim identifies as the trigger insert and trigger insert detent pin. He's cautious not to disturb the small detents seated in it, not wanting to chase them around the shop.
Pro-Tip: If you want to run an aftermarket trigger, know that none of the ones Jim tried would fit the Platypus without modification - the trigger bow needs specific cutouts machined into its back to seat into the frame correctly.
Reassembly and Quality Concerns Reassembly follows the reverse order, with Jim highlighting a few sequencing details that matter: the sear spring must rest on top of the sear and disconnector's legs, not behind or underneath them, or you'll end up with a dead trigger or a hammer that won't stay back. He also stresses the hammer must be fully back before installing the thumb safety, since the sear will otherwise block the safety detent from seating - forcing it can cause damage.
Crucial Safety Checks After reassembly, Jim runs his standard function and safety checks. He confirms the grip safety blocks the trigger bow from moving rearward, and separately checks the thumb safety, which blocks the sear from coming off the hammer hooks. He listens for any clicking during engagement, which would indicate the hammer shifting off the sear improperly, and confirms the hammer doesn't move or fall forward during either check.
Final Thoughts The Platypus stands out from the typical 2011 platform Jim usually covers, with its one-piece machined frame and grip, unconventional mainspring housing and safety removal methods, and a fully integrated bull barrel and compensator. Non-MIM internals and an unusually light overall feel round out a build that's clearly built differently than most of what's on the market.
