Disassemble a Staccato XC with me!

Welcome back to Jim's Armory. In this one, Jim puts the Staccato XC down on the bench for a complete disassembly, popping the hood on the gun that's often considered the pedestal against which other 2011s are measured. It's a chance to see what $4,400 actually buys in terms of parts, fit, and finish - and a few things along the way genuinely surprise him.

Safety First Jim starts by confirming the chamber is empty and there's no magazine inserted, checking twice and physically verifying before any tools come out.

The Upper: A Toolless Guide Rod and an Island Comp The slide comes off easily, followed by a toolless guide rod that Jim believes is made by Dawson. The barrel, link, and comp are all one piece - the link is staked in place, so Jim leaves it alone. The comp itself is what's known as an island comp, with a large expansion chamber behind a smaller exit hole up front, letting gases naturally vent out the top. Jim notes this style is expensive to manufacture.

Because the extractor is external, there's no roll pin to deal with from the top, saving some time. Removing the firing pin means pushing it in with a punch to free the retainer, then catching the firing pin so it doesn't launch across the room. The extractor comes out with a plastic pry tool - never metal - by pushing the hook off the breech face.

Pro-Tip: When removing the firing pin spring, never grab and pull on it directly - you'll stretch it out and increase tension, which can cause light strikes on your primers. Instead, note which way the coils run, hold the spring stationary, and twist the opposite direction to slide it free.

The Lower: MIM-Free Parts and a Composite Trigger The thumb safety requires the hammer to be back before it will come out, and Jim finds the detent has separated from its spring - something he says he's never seen before. Rather than risk altering the spring's properties by forcing it back on, he leaves it and makes a mental note that bending the end of a safety detent spring is a common trick to keep it from launching across the room during future teardowns.

The main spring housing, sear spring (which Jim calls the "leaf spring" because it's really three springs in one - for the grip safety, disconnector, and sear), hammer, sear, and disconnector all come apart in fairly standard 2011 fashion. Notably, these internal parts show no MIM circular stamps - Jim identifies them as machined via EDM (electrical discharge machining), a wire-based electrical process, and hand-fit by a gunsmith. The edges are smooth and clearly lapped and polished, which Jim contrasts with more mass-produced guns that lean on MIM parts.

The grip module comes off after removing screws that thread into T-nut inserts - handy to know, since a stripped screw hole means replacing just the insert rather than the whole frame. The frame and slide are both steel (confirmed with a magnet), not aluminum.

One part draws a specific complaint: the trigger shoe is composite, not metal. Jim isn't sure why, speculating it could be a weight consideration for drop safety, though he notes the actual trigger pull itself is excellent.

Reassembly and Quality Concerns Reassembly reveals just how tight this gun fits. Getting the grip module's screw bosses to seat behind their internal ledges takes real patience and a few tries, and Jim jokes that he never quite gets it smooth. He points out that everything - frame to grip module, pins, screws - fits with very little slop, which he attributes to Staccato's process of machining the slide and frame oversized, then hand-fitting them down for a "buttery smooth" lockup, per a factory video he's seen. Even so, he notes a small amount of movement remains, which is normal.

Pro-Tip: When reinstalling the sear and disconnector, make sure the sear spring rests on top of them, not behind - otherwise the hammer won't stay back and the gun becomes useless.

Crucial Safety Checks Once the ignition parts and safety are back in, Jim runs through function checks: confirming the hammer won't fall with the safety engaged in either direction, confirming the grip safety must be depressed for the trigger to work, and rechecking that the thumb safety clicks into both positions securely. After the barrel, guide rod, and slide go back on, he double-checks the chamber is still clear before calling it done.

Final Thoughts Jim comes away impressed with the barrel-and-comp being machined as a single piece and with the level of hand-fitting and polish on the internal parts - clear signs of the machining and labor behind the price tag. He's less enthusiastic about the composite trigger shoe and the grip module, and the detached safety detent spring was an unexpected wrinkle. Overall, Jim treats the XC as the benchmark 2011, and he's already planning a follow-up video comparing multiple guns at different price points side by side.
